The wife and I spent last weekend at Road America, watching the ALMS race on Saturday and the Champ Car race on Sunday. Here's my observations:
- Crowds were decent, very similar in size to last year. It seems that there's not a lot of overlap between the ALMS crowd and Champ Car crowd; on Saturday the Corvette Corral was overflowing, but on Sunday it was only around half full. Overall, though, the crowd sizes were roughly equal for both events, so someone else is making up for the cars that were missing Sunday.
- I saw two Ford GTs parked around the track, which brings the total number of Ford GTs I've seen "in the wild" up to three. While overall I'm not a huge Ford fan, I have to say they really got it right for that car--it's absolutely gorgeous from all angles, really an example of what automotive perfection can be.
- I'm surprised how much people are attracted by which manufacturers are competing in ALMS. For example, Acura is running in P2 this year, and there were a bunch of Acura NSXs parked around Road America that weren't there last year. Likewise, the number of Corvettes that show up for ALMS is probably triple the number that show up for Champ Car. Personally, I'd go to the ALMS race regardless what marques are running, as long as the racing was good. But it appears that I'm in the minority.
- I was happy to see five P1 cars running, but realistically the three non-Audis are so far off the pace of the Audis that you have to wonder, what's the point?
- It was good to see more Ferraris in GT2, instead of the lone Risi car last year. On the downside, the BMW entry is currently gone. And while the Panoz Esperante looked and sounded fantastic, it seemed to be way off the pace--I'm not quite sure how it pulled off the GT2 class win at Le Mans in 2006.
- Likewise, the Maserati entry in GT1 was a welcome surprise. They didn't seem to be pushing it very hard, though, so it wasn't much competition to the Corvettes, but it's qualifying pace makes it look like it could be a worthy competitor. In any case, it was an absolutely beautiful car. Now we just need Aston Martin to come back to GT1.
- Bourdais was totally on top of things on Sunday. Doornbos was able to stay with him for the early part of the race, but couldn't get close enough to challenge. Speedy Dan was putting in fast laps all day, as were Servia and Rahal--it's hard to fathom that he's only 18 years old.
- To give you an idea how much faster Bordais was than everyone else: at turn 5 I could look away from the track and still tell you when Bordais was coming through--he would just come screaming down the hill.
- I think everyone was happy to see Junqueira qualify 5th and running 3rd at the end of the first lap, but it went downhill from there. Legge's new purple/pink paint scheme looked absolutely great, but she was completely off the pace :( You could hear her lift in the kink, I wonder how much of that is related to her accident there last year.
Wow, long post. I have to say, though, that I'm hoping they run Champ Car and ALMS on different weekends next year; this year the total number of support races was way down compared to the two weekends last year, and I really missed seeeing the Barber series, MX-5 cup, Speed GT, ISMA Lites, etc. this year.
